The Selected Movies of the Italian American Mafia

Mafia movies captured the pubic imagination for over 50 years, from the Cagney movies up to the modern day. There have been some classic movies made in this genre, and some not so classic. My aim here is to present them, both good and bad, for your critical eye.

I decided this sub-genre of Crime movies warranted its own blog post.

                     The Godfather 1 (1972)

The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.


                                    

                    The Godfather 2 (1974)

The early life & career of Vito Corleone in 1920's New York is portrayed while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on his crime syndicate stretching from Lake Tahoe, Nevada to pre-Revolution 1958 Cuba.

 


                    The Godfather 3 (1990)

In the midst of trying to legitimize his business dealings in 1979 New York and Italy, aging mafia don Michael Corleone seeks to vow for his sins while taking a young protégé under his wing.  

                

                          Goodfellas (1990)

Henry Hill and his friends work their way up through the mob hierarchy. 


                                          
                         The Funeral (1996)

New York City, the 1930s. A powerful crime family is caught in a lethal crossfire between union organizers and brutal corporate bosses. Against this turbulent backdrop, the family's three street-hardened brothers and the women they love are about to be plunged into a deadly confrontation with their enemies, with each other, and with their own dark heritage of violence, madness and murder.

       

                        10th & Wolf (2006)

February, 1991. Tommy, a Desert Storm marine dismayed that the US isn't taking out Saddam, breaks some rules and faces hard labor. An FBI agent offers him an out: go home to his gritty, dockside home in Pennsylvania and help get the goods on an Italian heroine dealer; in return, no prison time and no arrest of Tommy's brother Vincent and cousin Joey. Loyalty to family conflicts with loyalty to the code of the street. Can Tommy sort it out, protect his brother and cousin, and stay true? Do young men die - in the sands of the Middle East and on the mean streets of the US - for no reason?

Using the Internet and global satellites, a group of gangsters pull off the biggest bank heist in the Mafia's history. 

                                           

                              Gotti (1996)

John Gotti, the head of a small New York mafia crew breaks a few of the old family rules. He rises to become the head of the Gambino family and the most well-known mafia boss in America. He is known as the Dapper Don for his expensive taste in suits, and the Teflon Don because none of the FBI charges against him will stick. Life is good, but suspicion creeps in, and greed, rule-breaking and his high public profile all threaten to topple him. 

               

                            Casino (1995)

Greed, deception, money, power, and murder occur between two mobster best friends and a trophy wife over a gambling empire. 

                     

                        The Last Don (1997)

An aging Don looks after his family the best way he knows how. Unfortunately his daughter doesn't quite see eye to eye with the Don's vision of a happy family.

The old Don dies, leaving the family empire in his son's hands. With the other families seeing this new development as a weakness, how long can the new Don lead his family?
